HASTINGS TOO HOT IN HARRIER RELAY

As expected the star quality of Phil Costley and Richard Potts proved too much for either their Gisborne or Napier counterparts in Sunday's annual running of the '1 to 1 Fitness Studio' sponsored Hawkes Bay Gisborne Road Relay Championships.

The team of Barry Herbison, Callum Millward, Costley, Mike Flemming, Neil Sargisson and Potts came out on top by over 6 minutes at the end of the 37.3km relay around the rolling countryside at the back of Taradale. The only time they were headed was on the first leg where Gisborne's multiple world age grade record holder Ron Robertson produced the fastest time of the day recording 23:06 for the 7km leg, 47 sec ahead of Hastings' Barry Herbison with Napier's Kevin Fisher a further 55 sec back. However Hastings Junior Callum Millward produced a stunning run on the short 5.4km second leg to not only haul his team back to the lead but give them a 50 sec lead at the end of the leg. Millward's run was fast enough to give him fastest lap honours on the leg by 1 sec over Napier's Graham Edmondson with Bush Harriers David Chard third fastest with 20:23.

It was the last either Napier or Gisborne saw of the Hastings team as Phil Costley scorched up the Appley Rise to record fastest lap time by 2:22 despite the heroic efforts of Napier's Craig Mathers who produced what was for his team Run of the Day. Mathers picked up the deficit on the Gisborne team and had put 50 meters on them after just 2k of the tough 6.7km leg. Gisborne spent the rest of the day chasing Napier hard and it was the battle between these two that had the most interest as Hastings continued to pull away.

Fastest time on the short but tough 'Heartbreaker' 4th leg went once again to a Hastings' athlete with track 400m stand-out Mike Flemming showing another string to his bow in beating Gisborne's Tony Ngarimu by 26 sec. With Napier's Paul Clark just 11 sec slower. Napier still held second place going into the 6km 5th leg where Clark's club-mate John Hambleton produced the fastest time by 8 sec over Gisborne's Graeme Lear, 19:11 to 19:19, with Hastings' Neil Sargisson being relegated to 3rd fastest time in 19:47.

With Hastings now over 3 minutes in the lead and running national representative Richard Potts on the last leg the race for 1st was well and truly over, however Napier's lead over Gisborne was only 39 sec and Gisborne felt they were still in with a shot at second. This was not to be however as Napier's Mark Speakman ran a strong anchor leg to bring his team home nearly 2 min clear of the Gisborne team. Richard Potts did return fastest time on this leg by 3:24 running 21:32 for the 7.3km to Speakman's 24:56 with Jill Costley recording the third fastest time overall for this leg at 26:11.

Hastings were similarly dominant in the women's section with their team of Wendy Paramore, Andrea Williams, Deidre Nieuwland, Hayley Sherborne, Claire Burnard and Jill Costley ending over 5 minutes ahead of the Gisborne combination. Although the Gisborne teams times were comparable to those of their Hastings' counterparts they were always slightly slower and when Jill Costley produced her '3rd fastest overall' effort on the last leg the Gisborne team were well and truly beaten.

Some of the closest racing of the day came in the 18km Fun Relay where several teams of juniors from the Napier Harrier Club raced against each other and one combination from Bush Harriers. There were several lead changes in a battle of the sexes with Napier Gold, a team of junior boys, battling with Napier Girls. Annika Edmondson got the girls off to a good start leading Stefan Smith to the first change by 14 sec. Sam Green pulled back 6 sec of the deficit against Claire McGettigan on the second leg before Kristy Edmondson put 1:04 back on to the lead against Andre Smith on the third leg. Eric Speakman pulled back 39 seconds over Melissa Loveridge on the fourth. Josh Betty finally got the boys to the front on the fifth leg running 10:33 to Sonya Clarks 11:32. Laura Smidt's determined final leg was not quite able to peg back the difference, running 18 secs quicker than Gabe Rawcliffe to bring the girls to just 8 seconds behind the boys team. Great racing!

The other events held in conjunction with the championship relay were also well supported with a HB Multisports club combination Maurice Windle, Kerry Harford, Shane Harrison, Ross Dyer, Ian Robertson and Nigel Messervey coming out ahead of two other combinations from their club in the 38km Fun Relay. Two of the sponsors teams also completed the 38km Fun Run.

As expected the HB Marathon Clinic dominated the 38km Fun Walk providing 5 of the 7 teams entered. Their combination of Robyn Wolfsbauer, Olive deRidder, Bob Fairley, Jogg Hulbert, Bev Davis, and Graeme Richards proved to be the fastest on the day.
