'Marett Madness |

A John Hambleton lead team successfully carried away the Marett Madness Trophy after Saturdays 'Marett Madness' relay event. The event is run by, and named after club stalwart Dave Marett, who also provided the trophy for the event. The Trophy is the steering wheel from Dave's old blue Falcon Stationwagon which made regular appearances at Harrier events all over the North Island for many years. This year the event format was changed due to the higher than usual level of the river at the Guppy Rd, Taradale event venue. This made it too dangerous for the usual river crossing so an alternative format was introduced. The teams of three were selected with two junior runners and 1 senior per team, and the juniors were split either side of the river. A runner from each team started simultaneously on either side of the river, heading off toward each other. When they met they then returned together down one side of the river and tagged the senior member from their team who then proceeded to complete an entire lap, crossing over both the Waiohiki Bridge and the Motorway bridge, before finishing once more at the river end of Guppy Rd. The winning team this year consisted of Stefan Smith, who ran the longer of the Junior legs, his brother Andre Smith, Brendan Speakman, who completed the shorter junior leg along with Andre, and club captain John Hambleton. Second team home was Nellie Graham, Eric Speakman and Kevin Fisher. The third team home completed a sort of Trifecta for the Speakman family with Mark Speakman running home for his team of Josh Betty and Aleesha Heywood. Due to the varying distances run by the juniors, no lap times are available for them but on the seniors final lap it was Speakman who ran out the fastest by 5 seconds over Hambleton and a further 8 seconds back to Fisher. |
