Mission Cross Country

Mission Estate Winery, Church Road, Taradale

28 April, 2001

The Napier Harrier Club hosted the first interclub event of the Hawkes Bay Harrier season on Saturday (April 28). Held at the Picturesque Mission Estate Vineyards in Church Rd, Taradale, the event was hugely popular with 94 athletes turning out to enjoy the racing. The events were all cross country and varied in length from 2.2km for the under 12’s up to 6 km for the more senior athletes.

In the early races the host club’s juniors did their best to hold the Hastings Harriers visitors at bay, however it did not go well with Hastings Ben Barry and David Morton placing 1,2 in the first race on the card, the under boys and girls. Napier’s Eric Speakman placed third in the boys race while Hastings again had victory in the girls in the form of Sacha Murray, who was closely followed by Napier’s Madeleine and Lydia Diver. The three girls were separated by just 2 seconds.

The second race was a combined event that saw the under 14, under 16 boys and girls, the under 18, under 20, senior and vet women all racing together over 3.7km. This made for a huge field of 46 runners, and consequently there was some excellent racing amongst the grades. First home overall and heading a Napier clean sweep of the boys 16 grade was Napier’s Kane Green, followed just 3 seconds later by club-mate Stefan Smith with Andrew Prosser rounding out the grade in 20th overall. 3rd across the line and taking the vet women’s honours was Hastings’ Deidre Nieuwlands, with club-mates Clare Burnard and Dianne Barclay filling the minor places. The boys 14 grade was easily won by Napier’s Ian Clark, but with Hastings Dominic Fleischl, and Nic Tremewan filling the next two placings the points were evenly shared. The girls 14 grade went to the Napier club with a clean sweep by Laura Smidt, Alanna Hambleton, and Shayna Heywood. Hastings’ Joanna Wright won the girls 16 grade over Napier’s Sonya Clark with Havelock North High School’s Kelly McIlroy filling third. In the girls 18, the points were once again evenly split with Napier Annika Edmondson winning from Hastings’ club-mates Hayley Sherborn and Julia Selwyn. However there was no such luck for the Napier club in the senior women’s race with Hastings clean sweeping the event, with Andrea Williams, Karen Solar and Tanya Potts filling first, second and third respectively.

The final race on the program was the combined Junior, Senior and Vet Men racing over 6km. With the Napier Clubs top seniors competing in the Rotorua Marathon it was one way traffic at the front of the field for the Hastings Club, however this did not detract from the racing. Nationally ranked runners Richard Potts and Mathew Holder produced an enthralling race with the two dicing with each other right through to the finish where Holder took a fine victory by just 5 seconds over Potts. Napier Athletic Club’s star Jason Stewart filled third place. Paul McGettigan got one back for the Napier club by winning the vet men’s race from Hastings’ Dan Haddock with Napier’s Eric Phimister taking third. The men’s under 18 went 1,2,3 to Hastings in the form of Ross Morrison, Ramon Stenson and Neil Bruere while Takapuna visitor Ryan Webber won the under 20 men’s event unopposed.

The days racing also incorporated the Napier Club’s first round of the sealed handicap series and the Napier Club’s Novice Cup.

The first Senior/Vet man to cross the line who has not previously won a Harrier event wins the Novice Cup. This year the trophy was won by Brent Jones, who led the Napier contingent home in the 6km event.

In a sealed handicap every one starts together but the club’s handicappers assign a predetermined amount of time to be deducted from the athletes finishing time. The faster runners have less deducted rom their times than the slower runners, thus giving all a chance of winning the handicap race. Senior ‘Runner of the Day’ Paul McGettigan had an outstanding run, doing enough to win the handicap event by 6 seconds on corrected time over Don McLeod with Leo Pearce taking third. Adele Marsh won the Senior/Vet women handicap race by 5 seconds from Marion Sherburn with Trish Cummins 3 seconds further back. Ian Clark won the Junior Boys 14/16 over Stefan Smith and Kane Green, while the girls race went to Laura Smidt over Shayna Heywood and Alanna Hambleton. The under boys and girls race together for the handicap points and it was Madeleine Diver first, Brendan Speakman second, and Lydia diver third.

In the end it was a comfortable victory for the Hastings club winning 99 points to Napier’s 73. The next inter club event will be the Hastings Steeples at the Tomoana Showgrounds on May 19.
