Joll's Farm Cross Country
3rd Open Handicap

Omapere Road, Matapiro

22 June, 2002

The heavy rains of last Thursday and Friday had little or no effect on the underfoot conditions when the Napier and Hastings Harrier clubs went racing at the Joll's Farm off Matapiro Road on Saturday. It was feared that the course may have been a little the worse for wear but the 61 athletes who turned up for the races were pleasantly surprised to find the conditions near perfect.

The races were being run on the open handicap system where the slower runners start ahead of the faster ones by a margin dependant upon their individual abilities. The speedsters then try to catch those ahead of them.

In the first race on the card it was a trio of Hastings runners who headed the field home, with Kerry Harford taking advantage of a generous handicap to easily lead home the large field of 28 athletes. Gillie Cooper and Ian Robertson finished second and third respectively. The first Napier runner home was Wayne Smith. Fastest times for the 9km race were recorded by Matt Holder (28:34), and Josh Barber (29:51) with Darryl Strachan (31:07) third fastest overall and fastest vet.

The next race had all the under 18 and under 20 Men and Women racing together with the Senior and Veteran women over 6km. Wendy Andrews produced a superb run to take the win by just on 1 minute from club-mate Claire Burnard, with Napier's Jo Cavanagh third home. Andrews had started as the last woman on the course and subsequently ran the field down. Michael Newton was first home in the Junior Mens ranks, followed 12 seconds later by Ramon Steenson, both of the Hastings club. Newton (22:37) was fastest over the course, Andrews (23:07) second fastest and Steenson (24:19) third. Cavanagh (25:25) was the fastest vet, with Sonya Clark taking the W18 and Hayley Sherbourn the W20 honours.

The final race was also a combined affair, involving all the remaining grades from under 16 down to under 12, boys and girls all together. Napier's Andre Smith came out on top, 36 seconds ahead of Hastings Sacha Murray who just held off Sarah Morton by 2 seconds at the line. The three had all started off a 6 minute handicap and trailed each other for the whole 3km lap. Murrays run (13:49) was the fastest of the under 14 girls, with Ben Barry (10:40) fastest under 12 boy, Abbey Green (18:04) fastest under 12 girl, Ryan Wooley (10:50) fastest under 14 boy, Stefan Smith (10:31) fastest under 16 boy and Laura Smidt (11:57) fastest under 16 girl.
