Queen's Birthday Road Races

Marine Parade, Napier

7 June, 2004

Marilyn Brown

On Monday morning, the Queen's Birthday Road Races were staged on the traditional course from Marine Parade around the foreshore, up Shakespeare Road and down Coote Road. Tremendous handicapping produced a swarm of runners entering the finishing shoot in every race.

The first contest the open walk was won by Paul McGettigan in the fastest time of 25.14. The race for the Harris/Frame Cup (boys 15 years and under) created some sibling rivalry. Eventually 11 year old Brendan Speakman held off the challenge from his brother Eric by 11 seconds, with Daniel Smith delivering another good effort for third. Another strong run from Ryan Woolley (15.50) gained him the fastest time, almost a minute quicker than his 2003 effort. Kane Green took advantage of a generous handicap and easily won the Fred Bock Cup (boys 19 years and under). Stefan Smith (15.17) came home second and recorded the fastest time.

The 9km.senior men's race for the Queen's Birthday Road Race Cup was won by Mark Lane by a mere four seconds from the fast finishing Iain Murray (32.51) who recorded the fastest time. Only six seconds separated Murray from Shane McCormack, who displayed splendid resolve over the latter stages. Napier Harriers retained the coveted Sweeney Anniversary Cup with their four fastest runners (McCormack, Craig Mathers, Mark Speakman and Craig Eustace) having a superior cumulative time than their Hastings rivals.

The last event on the programme incorporated all the female grades. Amie Boyle, runner up last year, went one better to win the Sovereign Cup (girls 15 years and under). Her strong effort, was topped off by outsprinting senior woman Andrea Williams to the finishline. Sacha Murray took second place ahead of Katie Harris(20.44) who produced the best time. Grace Oliver (25.36) had the best time for the girls 11 and under.

Coach Mick Cull couldn't avoid smiling, when fast improving Danelle Bryant delivered a polished effort to win the girls 19 years and under section. She crossed 30 seconds clear of her training partner Ashley Aitken, with Laura Smidt crossing in third. Aitken (18.05) recorded the fastest time for the 4.5km.

With Bronwyn Farquharson not defending the senior woman's Jubilee Cup, Gina Finlayson jumped at the opportunity. Finlayson stubbornly defended her handicap advantage to cross the finishing line as Andrea Williams closed to within five seconds. Marilyn Brown continued her consistent endeavours to finish third. Williams (17.40) had the fastest woman's time while Brown (20.17) was the quickest veteran.
