Fisher's Farm Cross Country

Pakuratahi Valley Road

30 April, 2005

Kevin Fisher's love affair with the Tough Guy Challenge manifested itself in the difficult course he created for Saturday's cross country on his parent's property in the Pakuratahi Valley.

The two large areas of spongy bog negotiated on every lap claimed several running shoes and every competitor took away a helping of slush to the showers.

The handicapper knew little of the running credentials of nine year old Liam Ward. Thus, pampered by a generous handicap, Ward easily won the 12 years and under race. He won by 37 seconds from Brendan Speakman who posted the fastest lap (8.50). James Harris produced a strong finishing sprint to grab third place from Annie Creagh.

In the second event, over 4km, Andre Smith produced a robust effort to win. He won by 25 seconds after a desperate chase by Michael Sullivan. In recording the fastest race time (16.38) Sullivan announced his arrival to all the competition in the Mens 16 years grade. Ben Creagh held on gamely for third place after leading for ¾ of the journey.

Dea Majstorovic won the Womens 16 years race from Katie Harris, who worked diligently to overcome her handicap but finally had to concede defeat by 15 seconds. Harris produced the fastest time(20.18) exactly the same as her 2004 time. Laura Nagel produced another strong effort in the testing terrain to cross in third place.

In the senior women's race, Ashley Aitken blitzed the field by over a minute and proved she flies through the mud with the same ease as she does on the track. Aitken produced the fastest time (18.21) and this year Marilyn Brown had to settle for second place although she was 45 seconds quicker than twelve months ago. Laura Smidt came through for third to pip Shayna Heywood.

Stefan Smith was victorious in the men's 19 years and under race. Smith (22.28) recorded the fastest time over the three laps and won comfortably, 25 seconds clear of a resolute Ryan Woolley. Woolley outkicked Caleb Milne in the sprint to the line.

For the second year in three, Kevin Fisher thrived on his home patch and won the senior contest by a comfortable 48 second margin. Fisher (24.02) recorded the fastest time and eventually caught the pacesetter Frank Busch and powered away once on the flat section of the last lap. Busch held his form to secure second, a comfortable 19 seconds clear of last year's winner Mark Lane.

Dea Majstorovic and Frank Busch's top efforts were recognized with Reading Cinema sponsored Runner of the Day awards.
