North Island Cross Country Champs

Spa Park, Taupo

2 July, 2005

Daniel Wallis starred for the Napier Harrier Club by capturing the bronze medal for the mens 19 years and under title at the 18th North Island Cross Country Championships. Held on the demanding Spa Park course in Taupo, Wallis (20.17) powerfully chased the pacesetters from the start, settled into third and never relinquished the position. The race was won by Shafat Salad (Hawks) in 19.21 from Andrew Haigh (Wesley). Napier team-mate Stefan Smith produced his best effort of the season to finish fourth, only 7 seconds adrift of Wallis, while Steven Smith (20.54) ran solidly for tenth.

In the masters women 45 years plus race, Marilyn Brown (22.09) produced a 63 second improvement from last season to finish an agonizing fourth, just 6 seconds behind Vivien Eyers (Wanganui). In the same event, Cheryl Simpson (24.08) was 10th and Dianne Barclay (27.44) another six places back.

In the girls 12 years and under race Annie Creagh (8.22) let her rivals clear out in the first 500 metres and although she finished strongly was twenty metres behind the third placegetter.

Another top prospect Jay Mason had the misfortune of a motoring mishap and couldn't make the start.

Congratulations go to James Holden (Hastings) who won the boys 14 years and under race.
