Reading Cinemas Missin Cross Country

Stunning weather, a challenging course and large fields were features of the Reading Cinema sponsored three race cross country event at the Mission Estate on Saturday. The inter-club contest for the John Sherwood Memorial Cup was very lop-sided, with the superior numbers from Napier Harriers easily securing a 176-96 victory over the Hastings club. It was a delight to witness the abundance of young faces on the start line for the 12 years and under race. Angus Fuhrer (Hast) proved a talented addition to the running scene, by winning the 2km race in 8.30. Napier's Charlie Chittenden chased valiantly but finished 5 seconds behind and just held out the fast finishing James Harris (Hast) by seven metres. Annie Creagh (9.08) won the girl's section comfortably, ahead of the eye-catching run from her new Napier clubmate Holly Edmonds (9.38). Securing third place was the vastly improved Natasha Town-Warner (10.31). Ben Gillies (Nap) blew the opposition away with a stunning run in the two lap event. He won by 40 seconds in the Boys 14 grade, ahead of Hastings' Michael Murray (16.29) and Napier's Brendan Speakman (16.59). In the Girls 14 grade, Lydia Diver (17.28) produced a scintillating run, to easily account for her highly respected Napier clubmate Laura Nagel (17.59). Napier newcomer Larissa Street (21.55) ran solidly to claim third prize. Katie Harris (Hast) sliced almost a minute off her previous best, in winning the Womens 16 grade in 17.54. Danielle Kiely (19.19) from Napier and Havelock North High School's Lydia Parker (21.17) filled the minor placings. Sasha Murray won the Womens 19 grade, while Gina Finlayson was first in the Senior Womens grade. In the Masters Women's division, new veteran Andrea Williams (Hast) won easily in 18.14 from the consistent Napier pair of Marilyn Brown (19.42) and Cheryl Simpson (20.33). In the final event over 6km, Ryan Woolley (21.33) had a ding-dong struggle with clubmate Steven Smith before taking out the Mens 19 grade by 30 metres. The best race came in the Men's 16 grade. Ben Barry (Hast) made a welcome appearance to win in 23.07, 11 seconds ahead of the resourseful Cameron Poole-Smith. David Morton (Hast) displayed good early season conditioning to withhold a brace of challengers to secure third place in 23.41. In the absence of more fancied contenders, Craig Mathers (Nap) won the Senior Men's grade convincingly in 22.14, 32 seconds ahead of last year's runner up Josh Barber (Hast). Iain Murray (Hast) was too strong for the Masters Men's field, winning in 23.46. After a conservative beginning, Shane McCormack( 24.09) threaded his way through the opposition to procure the runner-up spot ahead of Napier clubmate Mark Speakman (24.18). Veterinarian Michael Lintott (29.51) won the battle for the Napier Men's Novice Cup by a comfortable margin from Dentist Chris Wong (31.31). Meanwhile Kim Creagh (23.42) had a closer struggle with Lyn Helliwell (24.22) before becoming the recipient of the women's Novice Cup for 2006.
