Trentham Memorial Park, Upper Hutt |
| 9 June, 2007 |

Napier Harriers travelled to Trentham on Saturday to contest the prestigious Dorne Cup races. The group included thirteen of the club's primary school training squad. The races were held on a firm Memorial Park in warm and windless conditions. Georgia Creagh claimed the gold medal in the nine years and under girls race. She raced intelligently to trail Jessie Kerr (Olympic), who had beaten her in both their previous meetings during 2006. Then 250 metres from the finish, Georgia produced her major strength, a devestating sprint to win by 10 metres in 4.33 for the 1 km distance. She finished only a couple of metres behind the winner of the boys race. The run of the day came from the tiny first year runner Jasmine Ngan-Sue (9.09) who ran with surprising confidence to finish a close up fourth in the 2km eleven years and under girls contest. Jasmine was only seven seconds away from the second placegetter. Sophie Rose (9.36) ran strongly to finish a good sixth place in the same race. In the 13 years and under girls race, Annie Creagh (11.49) was outsprinted by her cousin Molly Creagh (Masterton) to be relegated to fifth, while Holly Edmonds was only 45 metres back in seventh place. The diminutive 13 year old Jess Middleton (15.36) raced in the Womens 16 years and under 4 km race (because her birth date required her to do so - the lower age race is for 13yrs and under) and only a long striding older adversary relegated her to sixth place over the last 30 metres. In the boys 13 years and under, Napier had five contestants, with the top placings coming from Toa Elphick-Iaveta (8th) and Charlie Chittenden (10th). Other Napier boys in the race Kaden Hall( 18th), Sam Hall (22nd) and Daniel Baxter (23rd) gauranteed Napier third place behind Hutt Valley and Olympic in the 13 years and under team contest. In the boys 11 years and under 2 km event Jack Smidt (8.37) ran aggressively to chase the leading bunch all the way. He entered the crowded finish shute in eight place, while Ieuan Edmonds finished 20th. Greg Edmonds finished 42nd in the Masters Men 40-49 contest over 8km, while Ron Middleton after starting extremely strongly unfortunately tore a calf muscle and hobbled home in 44th place. In the Masters Men's 50+ race Trevor Fulton finished 10th in 32.31. |
