The 2007 Hawke's Bay-Gisborne Cross Country Championships were staged on an extremely demanding course at McLaurin's Farm at Hexton near Gisborne on Saturday. The twisting course was very slippery and a quagmire in places after a week of wet weather. Each two kilometre lap included four uphill sections and two creek crossings.
Neville Smith (Has) won the Senior Men's title from clubmate Quentin Rew. Smith ground out the 12km journey in 49.36.
Shayna Heywood (Nap) took the opportunity to claim the Senior Women's title (Ironside Cup) after electing to run up a grade.
Favourite Andrea Williams (Has) displayed her superiority to secure the Masters Women's crown from Clare Burnard (Has) and Cheryl Simpson (Nap).
In the Masters Men's race Napier Harriers secured all three medals, with Mark Speakman rapidly seeing off the opposition to finish well ahead of Alan Simpson and Eric Phimister.
David Morton (Has) won the Men's 19 title (H.E.Taylor Cup) in a tight struggle from Glenn Barwick (Gis) and Eric Speakman (Nap). No more than 50 metres seperated the trio throughout the 8kms.
Katie Harris (Has) comfortably secured the Women's 19 title ahead of Aleesha Heywood (Nap).
Predictably James Holden (Has) claimed the Men's 16 contest for the Wareham Cup, while Greta Porter (Has) ran impressively, adapting to the conditions, to upset Laura Nagel (Nap) for the Women's 16 title.
In the Girls 14 grade, Aroha Brown provided the host club with their only title. She lead home Monica Burnard (Has) by 20 seconds, while Sophie Brennan (Nap) held on for the bronze medal.
Brendan Speakman (Nap) took the gold medal in the Boys 14 grade, ahead of Joel Willetts (Has).
By retaining her recent form, Holly Edmonds (Nap) claimed the Girls 12 title for the first time. She finished 16 seconds ahead of reigning champion Annie Creagh (Nap), who had to withstand a strong late surge from Dallas Parkinson (Gis).
Toa Elphick-Iaveta (Nap) ran intelligently to score a good victory over Josh Shinnan (Gis) and James Harris (Has) in the Boys 12 contest.
