The Napier Harrier Club marked the 40th anniversary of the death of four of its junior athletes with the running of the Memorial Road Race on Saturday.
The annual event is held in the memory of Ron Gibbons, Robbie Kingi, Bill Hughs and John Dolbel who were tragically killed in a car accident while returning from the Wairoa to Gisborne relay on 23 September, 1967. The club has presented the Memorial Trophy every year since, to the winner of the Fifteen Mile Road Race held around the outskirts of Taradale and Puketapu.
This year the conditions proved to be the biggest competition for young Eric Speakman as the 17 year old lead from start to finish, completing the course in 1:39:11 with a comfortable 9 minute and 5 second margin over last year's winner Eric Phimister. John Craven was third home a further 1m 38s back.
Marion Sherburn once again showed her tremendous durability by winning the women's race.
The event also includes a sealed handicap race for the 'Arthur Lord Trophy' and a 4 x 6km relay for the 'Speakman Green Cup'. Frank Price was the winner of the handicap event while the winning relay team consisted of Eric Phimister and the Father and Daughter combo of Ron and Jess Middleton.
