"Reading Cinemas
Mission Estate Cross Country Races"

Church Rd, Taradale

21 April, 2007

Holly Edmonds and Annie Creagh chase down another young Hastings athlete Napier Harriers walloped the Hastings club by a huge 209pts to 106pts to retain the John Sherwood Memorial Trophy for the third year. The annual interclub was held in conjunction with the Reading Cinema's sponsored Mission Estate Cross Country races, which attracted 78 competitors. The firm footing and ideal weather made for very fast times which was a feature of the early races.

In the first race, Toa Elphick (NHC) was made to work by last year's winner Angus Fuhrer (HHU). Elphick (7.53) only pulled clear over the final 250 metres to win by 18 seconds, while James Harris (HHU) held off five challengers to claim third.

Napier's Holly Edmonds (8.43) broke the course record in the Girls 12 race, by running 55 seconds quicker than last year. Edmond's club mate Annie Creagh (9.11), still handicapped by her recent injury, ran diligently to claim second, while third placegetter Annika Brennan (9.36), also Napier, displayed plenty of promise on her debut on this testing course.

Brendan Speakman (NHC) displayed his amazing improvement by running a minute quicker than last year to claim the Boys 14 race in 15:58. Joel Willetts (HHU) was runner up in 17:27 ahead of Napier's Charlie Chittenden (18.06), who has moved up to this age group.

Kate McIntosh (HHU) won the Girls 14 years race from Napier's Jess Middleton (19.31), with Sophie Brennan (NHC) finishing strongly to claim third place in 19:53.

Laura Nagel (NHC) displayed her tremendous recent form, by cutting 90 seconds off her 2006 time to win the Womens 16 race in 16:29 from year's G14 winner, Napier's Lydia Diver (16.50). Greta Porter (HHU) ran strongly to finish third.

Danielle Kiely (17.26) is beginning to reap the rewards of a dedicated training regime and won the Womens 19 grade for the Napier Club. Katie Harris (HHU) couldn't match the huge improvement in Keily and had to settle for second, while Hannah Drury (20.04) had a very successful first outing with Napier Harriers to claim third.

Oklahoma bound track star Ashley Aitken (17.28) easily won the Senior Womens race, from two other Napier Harriers Gina Finlayson and Anne-Marie Earwicker. The Masters Women's race was comfortably won by Sheila Smidt (22.37), while Kim Creagh (23.19) found enough reserves to hold at bay the steadily approaching footsteps of Dianne Barclay by 10 metres, giving Napier the Trifecta.

The outstanding run of the day came from James Holden (HHU) in winning the Mens 16 year race by a huge margin. Holden covered the 6km in a smart 22.09. Neil Kotze (HHU) was second and Ben Fulton (NHC) third.

James Holden, Mark Speakman and David Morton tracking Eric Speakman and Cam Poole-Smith Cameron Poole-Smith (22.16) recorded a victory in the Mens 19 race by running over a minute faster than in last year's outing. Poole-Smith's clubmate Eric Speakman (22.48) was second and David Morton (HHU) was 30 seconds adrift in thitd.

Neville Smith (HHU) and Shane Vincent(NHC) produced an intriguing tussle in the Senior Men's contest over three laps. It wasn't until the forest section on the last circuit that Smith gained the ascendancy, and pulled clear to win by 28 seconds. Ben Revell (HHU) was a minute back in third.

Napier's Mark Speakman (23.22 just 34 seconds behind Eric ) continued his impressive early season form to claim the Masters Men's race. Iain Murray (HHU) ran strongly to claim the runners up prize in 24:11, while Napier's Trevor Fulton (25.13) held at bay the other 14 veterans.

Finally, Havelock North Optometrist Niall McCormack claimed the other silverware on offer, the Napier Harrier's Novice Cup for 2007.
