North Island Cross Country Champs

The Napier Harrier contingent at the 20th North Island Cross Country Championships produced tremendous results in wet and very muddy conditions at Spa Park, Taupo on Saturday. In the very first race on the programme, Georgia Creagh won the Girls 10 years and under 1km race in 3.58. Her time automatically became a race record because of a change in that age group. Her assignment was made more difficult as the 90 strong field was held on the start line for ten minutes, in steady rain, awaiting the timekeepers to arrive. Once under way the diminitive Creagh was twice bullied off balance in the hectic start and was lying only 9th after 100 metres. Making up for that disadvantage was credit to her determination. She gained the lead with 220 metres left and although she only won by four metres from Sophie Pulford(Hamilton) and Sophie Voss(Rotorua), Creagh had the race well under control up the home straight. Her gold medal is the first ever by a Napier Harrier at this prestigious annual championship. In the second race of the day for Girls 12 years and under over 2kms saw Holly Edmonds(5th) 8.06, Annie Creagh(6th) 8.08, Annika Brennan(9th) 8.20, Sophie Rose(29th) 9.26 and Jodi Nagel(41st) 10.28 keeping the Napier colours to the fore. Holly was always in the leading group, while Annie started too conservatively and was left with too much ground to make up over the closing stages. Annika had her best race of the season and was rewarded with a top ten placing. Run in conjunction the Napier boys were Toa Elphick-Iaveta(6th) 7.40, Henare Harvey-Brewster(19th) 8.40, Jack Smidt(23rd) 8.49, Sam Hall(25th) 9.03 and Tamati Harvey-Brewster(31st) 9.38. In the Girls 14 race, two first year runners Jessica Middleton(11th) 12.54 and Jill O'Meagher(28th) 14.24 continue to make huge improvements. While in the Boys 14 race, Brendan Speakman(17th) 11.43, Charlie Chittenden(28th) 12.35 and Kaden Hall(35th) 13.01 put up strong efforts. In the Womens 16 years and under race over 4kms Laura Nagel(16.30) improved from ninth place on the first lap, to power home in fifth place in a field of 40 runners. In the Mens 19 race over 5kms, Eric Speakman(9th) in 17.26 was a top effort, as Eric has another two years in this grade. Amongst the other club representatives were Mark Speakman(25th) 23.22 in the MM35-49 race, a good effort in a field of 77 runners, unfortunately he lost the sibling battle by 16 seconds. Cheryl Simpson(17th) 26.10 in the MW 45plus race. Entrants in the Masters Men 50plus event over 6kms with 57 finishers were Trevor Fulton(10th) 25.09, Alan Simpson(20th) 26.18, John Craven(25th) 26.54 and Stephen Lindsay(29th) 27.15. Congratulations to all entrants on their top efforts. Napier Harriers were 13th for the club points trophy with 1673 points.
