Queen's Birthday Road Races

(Second Open Handicap)

Marine Parade, Napier

4 June, 2007

On Monday morning, in ideal conditions, the Napier Harrier Club staged the Queen's Birthday Road Races, which date back to 1934. These handicap races were generously sponsored by Jackson Flooring and Total Food Equipment.

The first race, for the Harris/Frame Cup (Boys 16 years and under) was won by a huge 93 second margin by the youngest entrant Jack Smidt. Only 16 seconds covered the next five finishers, with Kris Sweetapple holding out Brendan Speakman (16.48), who recorded the quickest time for the 4.5km lap. His elder brother Eric (15.19) won the Fred Brock Cup (19 years and under) as well as recording the fastest M19 time.

The huge smile said it all, when nine year old Georgia Creagh was presented with the Sovereign Cup (Girls 16 years and under) in the clubrooms. She won the 4.5km race convincingly by 95 seconds from older adversaries Hannah Drury and Jill O'Meagher. The quickest time, of 17.26, was recorded by Laura Nagel.

The Womens 19 years and under race was claimed by Aleesha Heywood from her sister Shayna and Danielle Keily (18.37) who was fastest around the 4.5km circuit.

In the Senior Womens grade Michelle Middleton was first across the line, but as an unregistered runner was ineligible for the Jubilee Cup. Thus second placegetter Joan Vyle claimed the silverware from Adele Marsh. Hastings Harrier Andrea Williams (17.29) claimed the fastest time.

The local constabulary dominated the 9km Senior Mens race. Sen.Sgt Mal Lochrie won the race by 32 seconds from work colleague Blair Cunningham. In a desperate finish, Cunningham held out the Wellington Scottish athlete Calab Milne by a few metres. Milne (33.02) gained some consolation by recording the best time.

The Sweeney Anniversary Cup was retained by the Napier Harrier team of Mark Speakman, James Bell, Trevor Fulton and Mark Lane.

In the open walk event, Anne Marie Earwicker won by 3.37 from Denise Smith.
