Shoe Clinic Apley Relay
HBG Road Relay Championships
Apley Road Circuit from Puketapu, Napier
18 May, 2008

The beautiful Hawkes Bay autumn day was a contributing factor to a fantastic days running in the hills of Puketapu in the 'Shoe Clinic Napier' HBG Centre Relay. An excellent turnout and new staggered start times meant a more exciting event as well as the record book getting a real work out. A new course record was set for the Senior Men's division when Hastings A team, which consisted of Michael Newton, Neville Smith, Phillip McKay, Josh Barber, and James Holden completed the 26km course in 1:28:21 (it was 1:28:30). Next course record to fall was the Senior Women. Again the Hastings Harriers had their way when the Hastings Girls A team (Steph Everson, Ruth Mills, Greta Porter, Katie Harris and Saskia Palleson) completed the race in 1:44:54. The previous record had been 1:49:18. But it wasn't just Hastings Harriers breaking records, the Napier Junior Men's team, Napier A, of Cameron Poole-Smith, Eric Speakman, Brett Pulford, Marno Wijnsma and Michael Murray, 1:29:19, managed to blitz the old record of 1:40:24

There were some excellent individual performances as well with Hasting runner Steph Everson in Leg 1 posting a new record. In leg two Napier Harriers stars Laura Nagel and Eric Speakman both took out records, while on the fourth leg new Napier Harrier Hayley Davis, running for HBMSC and Katie Harris of Hastings created a new records, and Naomi Fergusson of HBMSC ran anew record on leg 5.

The open 3.3km race was also hotly contested and once more Hastings took out the event with some strong running. First home was Callum Hobbs-Turner in a time of 12:34 that would have been respectable in any of the senior teams. He was backed up by First girl home was Napier's Georgia Creagh in a time of 13:34.
