| A rather disappointed looking group... |
On Saturday 14th June a team of 22 Napier Harriers competed at the Dorne Cup in Trentham Memorial Park, Upper Hutt. The conditions were beautifully sunny on a course which had once again been changed. The course held a few surprises. What looked easy run was in fact very deceiving. Out of the view of most of the spectators the course turned very rough and spongy under foot. The stop bank along the river was heavy going as the course organizers made sure runners had to go up an over it two or more times for each circuit. Also thrown in for the longer distance runners was a stream crossing, which was just too wide to clear without getting wet.
The Napier Club competed well but the biggest success story came from 9 year old Georgia Creagh who ran 2km in the under 12 year old grade. Despite a bad start in the big field and going over on her ankle 150 metres from the finish line, she still managed to take out 3rd place winning the bronze medal in that age group. In the under 14 year old girls race Annie Creagh, Holly Edmonds, Sophie Rosie and Jasmine Ngan Sue all ran a great race to secure 1st in the teams event.
Not to be out done the under 16 girls placed third in the teams with Jess Middleton, Laura Smith, Larissa Street and Abby Temple doing the business
The Dorne cup is certainly one of the best spectacles in the cross county running calendar as it draws big fields from clubs all around the lower North Island. By the end of the day everyone who had competed for Napier had enjoyed them selves, the atmosphere and the awesome team support.
(Other results if interest were ex members Ryan Woolley placing 2nd in the U19 race and Stefan Smith 4th in the Open Men)
