QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY ROAD RACES

Marine Parade, Napier

2 June, 2008

Kim Creagh in hot pursuit of Greta Porter

On Monday 2nd June, early in the morning, in surprisingly fantastic conditions considering the weather forecast, the Napier Harrier Club hosted the Queen's Birthday Road Races. The handicap races were generously sponsored by Jackson Flooring and Total Food Equipment. This was the 2nd of four open handicap races held this season, where slower runners start first and the guns attempt to run them down.

The first race was for the 12 and under, and cub grades. They competed over a 2km course along the waterfront to the Port and back to the start/finish line. Jodi Nagel has steadily improved her times since the beginning of the season, and this saw her happily first across the finish line. Rebecca Porter was underestimated by her handicapper when she had a brilliant run with the fastest time for the girls, and was second past the finish line. Next in was Kane Elms from the cub's grade narrowly taking third place fron Jason Pearson.

In the Boys 14/16 and Mens 19, the course covered was a 4.5k lap around the port, up the never ending Shakespeare Road, down Coote with another flat run along Marine Parade and back to the start/finish at Ocean Spa. James Harris (under 14) was the first back securing the Harris/Frame Cup, with 11 year old Jack Smidt 27 secs behind. Smidt chose to run up a grade for the day and he certainly held his own with a good time of 19:50. Brendan Speakman (boys 16) was in hot pursuit finishing 3rd with the fastest time for his grade (16:50). Other great runs in this race came from Jake Tully (boys 14 - 17:36) and Dave Morton (mens 19 - 17:44) who had the fastest lap times for their grade. Hayden Simmiss made good use of his handicap and managed to take home the Fred Brock Cup for Junior Men (M19) by staying ahead of Dave Morton who started 4 minutes behind him.

The Sovereign Cup (Girls 16) went to well deserving Laura Nagel who ran a stunning 4.5km race. She not only won the race, took home the trophy, she also broke the record. Nagel's time (16:22) bettered the previous record for Girls U16 set by Susan Barrowman (16.58) in 1985. Hannah Drury, who had the fastest lap time for girls 19 (17:36) was second in, and only 3 seconds ahead of Annie Creagh. Creagh (girls 14) had a very strong run of 18:19, which was also the fastest time for her grade.

In the Senior Women's grade Hastings athlete Ruth Mills ran away with the Jubilee Cup for first across the line, in a time of 17:01. Mills also had the fastest time and was looking strong as she pounded the last of the path to the finish line. Second place getter Diane Barclay, did well to stay ahead of the very determined Joan Vyle a mere 2 seconds behind. Mills' Andrea Williams (19.01) once again claimed the fastest time in the Masters Women's grade.

Neville Smith was the talk of the morning, after being handicapped to start 12:30sec behind the first runner in the Senior and Masters Mens 9km race (2 laps). He still managed to dominate the field and come home first. Clearly this meant Smith had taken out fastest time along the way for Senor Men, with the time 30:32. Colin Sue managed to hold onto second place with Lance Pearson only a smidgen behind. Iain Westphall (33:29) showed a big effort and held the fastest time for the Masters Men.
