HBG Road Relay Championships

Apley Road Circuit from Puketapu, Napier

16 May, 2009

Members of the winning team - EricPhimister, Brendan Speakman, Eric Speakman and Cliff Fellingham with sponsor Annie Kane

On a glorious HB day the Napier Harrier Club Men's A team finally got a victory over their Hastings Harriers rivals. It has been 12 years since the host club last won the Men's relay and the size of the victory made it all the sweeter.

The team were third on the road after a solid start from Craig Mathers before Eric Speakman put a minute on his Hastings counterpart up the gruelling 'Apley Rise' to give Eric Phimister a 30 second lead heading into 'Heartbreaker'. 59 year old Phimister ran his best ever time for the leg to hand over to Cliff Fellingham with the team just 20 seconds down, but not for long. Fellingham took a minute back from the Hastings team to give Brendan Speakman a 40 second lead at the change over to the final leg. After winning his schools cross country race the day before, and playing a full game of football in the morning, Brendan extended the lead to 3:36 at the finish.

Unfortunately the Women's team could not replicate the feat, being well beaten in their contest.

In the Junior Teams race over the final 3.3km leg was won by Napier with Devon Beckman leading the team home, with Toby Hall, and Harry and Jack Crichton making up the numbers.

In the fastest laps, the Napier men recorded three wins (Eric Speakman, Cliff fellingham and Brendan Speakman) and three seconds. David Johnson proofed he should be upgrading his membership by running the second fastest time on the first lap, Eric Phimister was second on his leg and Samuel Hall ran an outstanding leg for his team to credited with second fastest time (David Johnson ran quicker but has already another leg).

Jess Middleton was the only Napier woman to win a lap, running fastest time for 'Home Run', but Annie Kane, Hannah Drury, Holly Edmonds and Annika Edmondson all ran second fastest on their legs. Also, Keiko Hashiba ran a new Senior Women's record for 'Brooklands'.
