Napier Harriers had a clean sweep of both the Shoe Clinic sponsored Centre Relays on Saturday with a convincing win in the senior men grade who retained their title and the Napier women winning for the first time in many years. Napier got off to a good start with Toa Elphick-Iaveta handing over with a comfortable lead over the non-championship starters. Eric Speakman pulled further ahead and the team was never in danger of being caught over the 5 lap 26km course. Unfortunately Hastings and Gisborne did not field teams in the mens grade although 18 teams took part overall from Napier Harriers and good support from Hawke's Bay Multisports. Napier women also got off a great start with Ni'ia Hothersall breaking the first lap record and handing over to Laura Nagel who also broke the second lap record to put the team 6min ahead after only two laps from the Hastings womens team. The relay was pretty much over from then on as Napier went on to win by 8 ½ minutes. In the boys and girls 14 and under grade Napier and Hastings had a good tussle with Napier also winning the teams section over a distance of 3.3k. report Wayne Smith
