Dorne Cup

Trentham Memorial Park, Upper Hutt

12 June, 2010

Napier Harriers made their mark at the Dorne Cup cross country races which is the largest cross country race in the southern North Island covering ages 9 and under to masters grades of 35 and over. The Napier Club had their greatest success ever as a club at this event with one first and three second placings. The club has scored the odd first placing over the years however in various grades.

Held in overcast and very muddy conditions at Trentham Memorial Park the races included four stream crossings in some of the races. The younger grades did not get the pleasure of the cold water encounters but enjoyed the mud in other parts of the course.

The first success of the day came in the Boys 11 and under grade who raced over 2k. The 11 year old Bradley Christison took off at the start and held a commanding lead all the way to cross the line in first place with his 10 year old brother Thomas also having a storming run to secure second place early on and held off a strong challenge up the home straight. The muddy conditions did not seem to worry these two bare footed runners.

Not to be out done, in the Girls 13 and under grade young Georgia Creagh also showed her class by taking second place over 3k and enjoying the stream crossings and the mud and slush.

Soon after the finish of that race 9 year old Kingston Webb, a new Napier Harrier member this year, led his 1k race right up to near the finish where he was passed near the home straight but finished strong to retain second place.

In the ladies 16 and under race over 4k Holly Edmonds ran well for 7th place followed by club mates Annie Creagh and Sophie Rose. This was the third race these ladies had run last week but still ran creditably.

The last race of the day saw the senior and masters men race over 8k with Napiers Eric Speakman running very well in his first year in the senior grade to also finish in 7th place with former Napier Harrier, Stefan Smith taking second place running for Scottish Harriers in Wellington.

Next Saturday will see our 16 and under ladies competing in the National School Cross Country races in Waikanae along with our 16 and under boys Toa Elphick-Iaveta and Jake Tully who are also running very well.
