Green Shield Relay

A great gathering of 56 runners took part in the four person relay at the Dolbel Estate Winery in Springfield Road. This relay was first held in 1941 and except for the war years, has been held ever since. Fourteen teams participated in great underfoot conditions which were in contrast to the flooded running conditions of the week before. Of the all the teams taking part we had four changes of leaders during the relay with Mark Butzbach leading in the first 2k lap in 8min 28sec followed by Travis Keighley's team in 8min 40sec and Kingston Webb placing his team in 3rd place in 8min45sec. On the second lap of 4k Craig Mathers took his team from 7th to first by running 15min 26sec followed by Matt Somervel's team only 14sec adrift with third place being Mark Lane's team 4sec behind. The third lap, also 4k, saw yet another team lead at the end of the lap where Devon Beckman came through from 6th to first in a good time of 15min 26sec followed by John Craven's team which was holding onto 2nd place followed by Georgia Creagh who had slipped from 1st to 3rd behind the older runners. Eric Speakman took his team from 13th right up to 5th on this lap. That effort was enough to hand over to Sam Hall on the fourth lap of 2k who took the team from 5th to 1st to claim the winners trophy, followed by Ben Harrison's team which had slipped from 1st to 2nd and Wayne Smith's team coming through from 4th to 3rd on the last lap. The winning team was Paul Webb, Kelly Sunnex, Eric Speakman and Sam Hall in an overall team time of 49min 36sec followed by the team of Fraser Pearson, Karl Iaveta, Devon Beckman and Ben Harrison in 50min 06sec with third going to the team consisting of Tobi Trevena, Craig Mathers, Georgia Creagh and Wayne Smith in 50min 55sec. report Wayne Smith
