Mission Interclub Cross Country

Napier Harriers hosted the annual Reading Cinemas inter-club cross country races at the Mission Estate Winery on Saturday in brilliant conditions with Napier Harriers dominating the points to secure the Sherwood Trophy for sixth year in a row with 210 points to Hastings Harriers 60. Napier Harriers had 57 taking part with 13 from Hastings Harriers United. The inter-club races catered for runners from 10 years through to the over 60s with a Cubs race for 7-9 year olds being held as well as an introductory race to cross country running. In conjunction with these races were the Napier Harrier Clubs Novice Cup races which are for runners who have never won a harrier race before. The recipients of the trophies were Kirsty Christison in the ladies 4k race and Matt Somervell in the men's 6k race. The closest racing was in the Boys 12 and under race where the three place getters were all sprinting up the home straight after a close tussle over 2k while possibly the most meritorious race came from Shamus Christison, 14 years old, who won the race among the boys 14, women 16 and 19 years of age through to senior women/masters women over 4k. report courtesy Wayne Smith (Note: The Cubs grade is for non-championship under 12's - Mark S)
