On Saturday, Napier Harriers held their annual Green Shield Relay, which was first held in 1941. This popular club relay was keenly contested by 10 teams of 4 runners with the first team member running 4k, the second runner 2k followed by other 4k and 2k runners.
Notable runs were had by Stefan Smith coming in 2min ahead of the next runner in 14m39s on the first lap with another very good run coming from young Isaac Dyer, also on the first lap, who at 13 years old had to run against all senior (over 20 years) runners and competed very well among them and changed over in 5th place in 17m34s.
The fastest runner on lap 2 (2k) was Max Taylor in 10m05s while the fastest on the 4k lap 3 was Matt Somervell who took his team from 4th to 1st after a strong run in 17m56s. The final lap saw young Adam Barron chomping at the bit on the start line to take off and take his team into first place over the final 2k lap with Josh Keating taking fastest time in 8m47s.
The winning team consisted if Ieuan Edmonds, Louise Hancock, Steve Lindsay and Adam Barron with an overall team time of 56m31s followed 31s later by the second team of Niall McCormack, Wayne Smith, Matt Somervell and Cheryl Simpson with the third team of James Bell, Sheila Smidt, Jason Pearson and Josh Keating only being 11sec back.
