Welcome To the Napier Harrier Club

Georgia and Annie Creagh show off their 2006 Dorne Cup medals with Eric Speakman The Napier Harrier Club was founded in 1934 and is a family orientated club with over 100 members ranging in age from 7 to 70 and caters for runners of all abilities from beginners to Nationally ranked speedsters.

During 1984 the club joined Greendale Tennis and Taradale Cricket to form the Taradale Sports Association. Together we built new clubrooms in Taradale Park, with vehicular access off Symons Lane in Taradale, Napier. This wonderful facility includes changing rooms with excellent showers, a kitchen and a licenced bar and is the focal point of most of our activities. Our post race afternoon teas are legendary!

The club holds oganised runs every Saturday from April to October, rain hail or shine. We usually assemble at the clubrooms or the race venue at 1.45pm and begin action at 2pm. Every Saturday through the season involves either a race or a 'Group Run'. The first half of the season consists of mainly cross country or off road races. The latter part of the season is mainly road races. The courses are many and varied, and generally no two events will be over the same terrain in the season. 'Pack Runs' are low key training runs where runners of similar ability group together to go out for a training run.
In addition to our club programme there are also races out of town at Provinicial or National level that we attend during the year. These include the Provinicial championship races over both Cross Country and Road, the Dorne Cup cross country races in Upper Hutt, the North Island Cross Country Champs in Taupo, the Forest Relays in Rotorua and the National Road Relay Champs which this year are in Otago.

What are the aims of the Napier Harrier Club?

Our club aims to motivate and help people find enjoyment in running through regular competition. Our members enjoy participation and achievements in running. The club caters for people of all levels of ability. Everyone sets goals, with the common desire to improve or do their best. Our club aims to be large enough to matter but still small enough to care for everyone.

What events are available with the Napier Harrier Club?

Group Runs - From the clubrooms. These are kept to a minimum as everyone loves to race!.
Relays - Marett Madness, Green Shield, Sweeney Shield and 4x6km Memorial Road Race relay are all randomly selected combinations. Centre Road Relay a little more serious as the best chase championship medals.
Team Races - Strifflechase and the Handicap Team Event. Randomly selected teams again.
Open Handicap Races - Four races a year constitute the club championship in each grade. Slower runners start first and the guns attempt to run them down. Competitors get points from their finishing position.
Sealed Handicap Races - Four races constitute the club championship in each grade. Everyone starts from scratch and only after you finish do you discover if you need to 'shout' the handicapper. Again everyone gets points from their finishing position.
Scratch Races - All Provincial and Club Championship races, and the Hastings Steeplechase.
Interclub Races - We are joined by other clubs to race.
Club Away Trips - Dorne Cup (Trentham), North Island Cross Country (Taupo), Forest Relay (Rotorua) and N.Z. Road Relay Champs (various).
National Championships - N.Z. Cross Country Champs and N.Z. Road Race Champs.
Summer (off-season) - We have runs of 70-90 minutes from the clubrooms every Saturday 2.30pm. We organise two series of eight 5km fun runs/walks (Oct/Nov and Feb/Mar) on Tuesday's at 6pm from Bluewater Sports Bar.

Any member (or prospective member) may race over any of the shorter distances on offer at each event. This means that if you are not up to running the full distance that your age group is racing you may enter in any of the shorter distances instead. Of course there will be no championship points on offer if you take this option, but at least it gives you the chance run. *NOTE* Juniors will not be permitted to race 'up grades' in the longer races (however the senior or masters women may run the longer events if they wish).

Why join the Napier Harrier Club?

This will give you the opportunity to compete regularly, which will give you more enjoyment than just jogging around the park. The thrill of competition will give you a target for your training and a reason for improving your fitness. You will create new friendships and probably find people to train with, especially for those longer runs or through the cold wintery conditions. Our club has five coaches and presently a very popular junior training squad. The Harrier Club has a social side, we hold an annual dinner and have an end of season prizegiving evening. Our clubrooms provide afternoon tea facilities, a television, table tennis tables, a pool table, a dart board and full bar facilities. Being a member of the club you will receive more encouragement, and in turn you will feel the desire to encourage others wearing your club colours.
